Next Step – FAFSA Completion
FAFSA completion is the next important piece of our Aspire Higher Maine initiative. Without financial aid, most students and families would be unable realize their dream of higher education. The good news is that there is money available to help students, but they must complete the FAFSA in order to access those funds. The link between FAFSA completion and college enrollment is clear – 90% of high school seniors who complete the FAFSA, enroll in college within one year.
Not only is the FAFSA the way students apply for federal financial aid funds, but it is also how Maine students apply for the State of Maine Grant. To be considered, students simply need to complete their FAFSA by May 1. Many colleges also use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for their institutional funds.
The Maine College Access Network has partnered with the Finance Authority of Maine to promote FAFSA Labs throughout the state. For a listing of these events and online help to complete the FAFSA, visit FAME’s Filing the FAFSA section at FAMEmaine.com.
Please continue to encourage students to create their FSA ID as they will need this to access their FAFSA. It takes about 10 minutes to create an FSA ID, so we recommend creating an FSA ID ahead of time. One parent of a dependent student will also need to create an FSA ID to sign the FAFSA. An FSA ID can be created anytime at fsaid.ed.gov. Students can keep track of their FSA ID information by using this sheet.
